Collection: Balvenie

Balvenie Distillery is a Speyside single malt Scotch whiskey distillery in Dufftown, Scotland owned by William Grant & Sons.

On December 19, 1839, William Grant was born in his father's home in Dufftown. At the age of seven he began herding cattle on a property near the upper Deveron River. He began as an apprentice shoemaker before becoming a clerk and eventually bookkeeper at the Mortlach distillery in 1866. There he was hired as a clerk and later promoted to managing director while learning the craft of distilling.

Why the Balvenie Whisky Distillery is so special

Balvenie is not only one of the most traditional distilleries in Scotland, but has also managed to perfectly combine authentic craftsmanship with innovation like few others. If you're interested in Scotch whisky (or simply looking for a new experience), it's worth taking a closer look at Balvenie – and what makes their whisky so unique.

What makes Balvenie so special

The Balvenie distillery is located in Dufftown, in the heart of the Speyside region. Since its founding in 1892 by William Grant, the distillery has stood for traditional production and uncompromising quality. What sets Balvenie apart from others is its attention to detail and its commitment to carrying out as many production steps as possible in-house. This is exactly what you'll later feel and taste in your glass.

Own barley fields

While many distilleries source their barley from large suppliers, Balvenie grows some of it on its own fields. This ensures consistent quality and allows for experimentation with different barley varieties. As a whisky lover, you get a product that's truly local.

Traditional kiln and own malthouse

A real highlight is the distillery's own malthouse. Few distilleries in Scotland still dry and turn the germinating barley themselves, as it is laborious and expensive. At Balvenie, however, this is part of the brand's core. Here, you'll find a classic kiln where the malt is dried over peat smoke. The employees turn the malt with shovels, just like 100 years ago.

Coppersmith and in-house barrel maker

Balvenie not only employs its own blacksmith to maintain the copper stills, but also its own cooperage team. The wooden casks in which the spirit matures are regularly repaired, maintained, and sometimes even rebuilt. This gives Balvenie maximum control over the aroma and maturation of the whisky.

Storage and barrel management

The barrels in which the Balvenie matures make a significant difference in flavor. American oak barrels, European sherry casks, and special cask finishes are used. Master of Malt David C. Stewart is responsible for the selection and combination of casks and is considered a leading expert in cask management.

The production of Balvenie Whisky

Whiskymaking is a process where every detail counts. Balvenie remains true to many of its time-honored methods, demonstrating that craftsmanship still makes a difference.

Malting and mashing

After harvesting, the barley is malted and dried. The malted barley is then crushed, mixed with water, and "mashed." This means that the starch it contains is converted into sugar.

Fermentation and distillation

With the help of yeast, the sugar ferments into alcohol. The resulting "wash" is distilled in two stages in traditional copper pot stills. This creates a pure, characterful alcohol that forms the basis of the whisky.

maturation

The fresh spirit is filled into wooden barrels and usually aged there for many years. Balvenie is known for innovative barrel maturation techniques, such as the so-called "DoubleWood" process, in which the whisky matures in two types of casks.

Bottling

After maturation, the whisky is usually bottled without artificial additives. Every bottle of Balvenie tells a story of time, patience, and true craftsmanship.
