Shenk's Homestead Distillery Sour Mash Whiskey 2024 represents the enduring tradition of American whiskey and honors the legacy of John Shenk, an 18th century distillery pioneer. This special bottling is the result of a meticulous manufacturing process in Kentucky and embodies the essence of the sour mash process , in which a portion of the previously distilled whiskey, known as "setback", is incorporated into the next mash.
With an alcohol content of 91.2 proof, this full-bodied small batch whiskey shows the complexity and depth that lovers of the genre appreciate. The 2024 release is characterized by a significant proportion of rye, known for its characteristic spicy and herbaceous notes. It is matured in French oak barrels from the Vosges region. These barrels are naturally air-dried for 24 months before use and then toasted according to specific specifications, giving the whiskey a special smoothness and complex taste.
