How is Maker's Mark made
The ingredients – wheat instead of rye
While classic bourbon recipes usually use rye as the base grain, Maker's Mark relies on winter wheat. Along with the corn and barley typical of bourbon, the wheat provides a particularly soft, almost creamy flavor. The water comes directly from a private limestone spring, giving the whiskey freshness and clarity.
Mashing and fermentation
Wondering what happens after the grain selection? First, the grain is blended and mashed with water from the limestone filter. The mash is then fermented with a proprietary yeast strain that has remained unchanged for generations. This family secret ensures the delicate aromas you discover in your glass.
Burning process
The distillation process takes place in a classic copper pot still. It is distilled twice to produce a particularly pure and refined spirit.
The storage
For Maker's Mark, only select American white oak barrels are used, which are heavily charred inside ("charred oak"). This gives the whiskey its characteristic vanilla and caramel aroma. Depending on the flavor development, it is usually aged for six to seven years. Here, taste counts, not calendar.
The finish – hand-dipped in red wax
Before the whiskey goes on sale, each bottle receives the famous wax seal. To this day, the bottles are still hand-dipped. No two seals are alike, making each bottle unique.
The special features in the glass
Maker's Mark stands out primarily for its aromatics and exceptional mildness. Unlike many bitter bourbons, you'll taste soft vanilla, caramel, and even a hint of honey. Typical of Maker's Mark is that the whiskey remains pleasantly sweet and almost buttery smooth on the finish. It also performs wonderfully neat, on the rocks, or in a classic Old Fashioned.
