Lagg Whisky Distillery – Everything you need to know about the new Islay legend
The island of Islay is a dream destination for many whisky fans. But it's not just classics like Laphroaig, Ardbeg, or Bowmore that are making waves here. The Lagg Distillery has managed to establish itself as a major player in just a few years. What exactly sets Lagg apart? How are whiskies produced there, what special products are available, and what makes this young distillery so special? Here you'll find everything you need to know about Lagg.
The start of a new era on Arran
In 2019, the Lagg Distillery opened its doors on the Scottish Isle of Arran. Although Islay is considered by many to be the home of smoky whisky, Lagg wanted to establish a new, independent tradition on Arran. The Lagg distillery is part of the Isle of Arran Distillers, which previously produced high-quality single malts with the Lochranza Distillery.
Lagg builds on a centuries-old tradition, as peated whisky was once distilled on Arran. The distillery sees itself as a modern homage to these origins.
Production at Lagg – Tradition meets innovation
Regional raw materials and peat smoke
You may be wondering how Lagg whisky is made. The foundation of each bottle is the finest Scottish water, malted barley, and a lot of manual labor. Unlike many other "younger" distilleries, Lagg has focused on smoky single malts from the very beginning. The distillery uses malted barley that, at 50 ppm (parts per million), is significantly more heavily peated than most Arran products.
The peat comes from Scotland and gives the whisky its distinctive, smoky aroma, which still leaves room for sweet and fruity notes.
The distillation
At Lagg, distillation takes place in specially designed pot stills. It is distilled twice to produce a particularly pure and aromatic distillate. From the outset, the focus is on a strong, full-bodied whisky that doesn't hide its character.
Barrel aging and handcraft
The Lagg whisky is allowed to mature in a variety of different casks. These include ex-bourbon, sherry, and wine casks, as well as rare wood species for special editions. The cask selection significantly influences the aroma and gives each batch its own personality.
Each bottle is bottled and hand-labeled on Arran. The attention to detail is evident at every step of production.
