Isle of Harris Distillery

The Isle of Harris is an island on the Scottish west coast and has been home to one of the youngest whiskey distilleries in Scotland since 2015: the Isle of Harris Distillery. The distillery's goal is not only to produce excellent single malt whiskey, but also to create long-term jobs and training opportunities on the island. The whiskey, called 'The Hearach', which means 'Inhabitant of Harris' in Gaelic, is the island's first legally produced whiskey and was launched in time for the 8th anniversary of the distillery's opening in 2023.

The Isle of Harris is known for its soft waters that flow over the Lewisian Gneiss, one of the hardest rocks in the world. Because of this, the water hardly releases any minerals and therefore provides ideal conditions for whiskey production. The production of "The Hearach" follows complex processes in which each step receives more time and attention than usual in the industry. Great value is also placed on the best wood management and optimal ripening conditions in the warehouses. The warehouses are spectacularly located on the Atlantic Ocean, providing the perfect climate for the maturation of the whisky.

In addition, Harris Distillery has strong support from the local community, who are very pleased with the creation of secure jobs and training opportunities on the island. The distillery describes itself as a “social distillery” and is therefore very committed to the community.

The Isle of Harris is also known outside of Scotland for its breathtaking nature. The island offers a mix of mountain ranges, coastal paths, sandy beaches and abundant wildlife. A visit to the Isle of Harris is a worthwhile experience not only for whiskey lovers.
