The complexity of this Port Charlotte SC: 01 2012 pushes the very limits of the Islay single malt as you know it. Combining the distillery's two greatest obsessions, impeccable provenance meets high-quality French oak. For the first time in the Barrel Exploration series, this release features 100% Islay-grown barley. The 2011 crop was grown by seven of their farming partners, all located within 10 miles of the distillery.
Tasting notes
Nose: Sweet on the nose, stone fruit and a delicate floral scent. Evidence of smoke comes over time. First, peach syrup, dried apricots, honeydew melon and ripe pineapple. Brown sugar, vanilla fudge, caramel and marzipan. Heady notes of honeysuckle and heather weave through the sweet ripe fruit notes. Peat smoke and warm toasted oak come through with a little time to add depth and complexity to the sip.
Palate: On the palate, the warmth and smooth texture of this whiskey elegantly flatters the palate, bringing together a balance of light peat smoke and ripe fruit. Another sip confirms both the beautiful viscosity and the depth of flavor, as earthy notes of leather emerge beneath the delicate smoke. The oak brings strength and sweet vanilla, chocolate and citrus to complement the spirit's fruity waves.
Finish: A whiskey you'll wish lasted forever, the wonderful marine minerality and earthy peat smoke linger on the palate with hints of citrus.
