Octomore 14.3 Super Heavily Peated is an outstanding single malt that reflects the terroir and unique qualities of Islay barley. This is barley grown on the Octomore farm, less than two miles from the distillery. The head distiller Adam Hannett has perfectly worked out the flavor of the Islay barley. The peat content of the grain is particularly high, which gives the final distillate an intense spiciness.
The Octomore matured in a combination of first and second fill casks. 50% first-fill former American whiskey casks and 50% second-fill wine casks were used. The influence of the oak is clearly noticeable, but without dominating the taste of the barley. The subtlety of the maturation preserves the terroir and unique qualities of Islay barley.
The smell of the Octomore 14.3 reveals distinct aromas of hot, sweet mash, which are complemented by the peat component due to the strong spiciness. The scent is distinctive and is enhanced by soft, biscuit notes of malted barley. With intensive inhalation, delicate fruity notes of caramel, honeycomb and a hint of vanilla are also perceived.
