Octomore 13.3
Distilled from barley grown on a single farm on Islay, Octomore 13.3 demonstrates the phenomenal power of flavor when super-heavy peat is combined with Islay's variable harvests. This release is matured in a basic package of first-fill ex-American whiskey casks and a complementary selection of second-fill European oak casks sourced from the Rivesaltes region of France and the Ribera del Duero region of Spain.
Tasting notes
Nose: Aromas of malt sugar and gentle peat smoke lead you into the whiskey. Next are layers of fresh green fruits, followed by rose, geranium, apricot and eucalyptus. Marzipan, ginger nut cookies and honeydew melon can also come through, although with a little time the malty-fruity character emerges. A drop of water brings out the peat smoke wonderfully.
Palate: Soft and delicate on the palate, sweet honey and brown sugar give way to hints of peat smoke. The second sip brings lemon peel and mussels, a delicate sea note along with malty biscuit notes and marzipan and coconut. The peat smoke has hints of boot polish and ash, but is gentle enough to allow the subtle floral malt notes to shine.
Finish: The maritime character develops and the smoke increases on the palate, honey and lemon with warm sand and marzipan. Final fruity traces of peach and pear compote bring a little sweetness to the finish.
