Bruichladdich The Ternary Project
This Bruichladdich The Ternary Project was specially bottled for the UK market at 52.1% cask strength and is limited to 4,000 bottles.
Consisting of:
30% Bruichladdich:
Unpeated Bruichladdich spirit distilled prior to the distillery's closure and later Renaissance was first filled into 2nd fill ex-bourbon hogsheads before being transferred into French red wine casks, then into Fernando De Castilla's Pedro Ximinez sherry butts.
40% Port-Charlotte:
Distilled shortly after the distillery's renaissance, this heavily peated Port Charlotte spirit was filled into a combination of 1st-fill Bourbon casks, 1st-fill Oloroso sherry casks and 1st-fill Virgin Oak.
30% Octomore (Distilled 2008):
Octomoere Super heavily peated single malt distilled in 2008, bottled in Sauternes, French Mourvedres, Austrian sweet wines, ex-Amarone and Bourbon casks.
Nose: All of a sudden a combination of peat smoke, dried figs and toasted oak with rich dried tobacco comes out of the glass. The powerful characters of this whiskey intertwine and show their intensity. When the dram begins, so does the detail and complexity. The deep earthy, dry peat smoke. Sweet toasted oak with coconut, creamy vanilla, cinnamon and milk chocolate. Layers of fruit range from dates, figs, raisins to cranberries, cherries and peaches. Candied citrus peel and black tea. leather and sea salt. Hazelnuts and a hint of gorse blossom.
Palate: On the palate, the presence of this drop is immense. The rich texture sweeps the palate bringing with it the earthy peat smoke, dried fruit and rich oak beautifully balanced without one aspect dominating the other. Barley sugar and stone fruit add their weight and then the lighter citrus notes, vanilla, peaches, cherry. Another sip opens the floral elements and the gentle sea notes. The characters of the three components Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore are all evident and they come together to create harmony and balance.
Finish: On the finish, the floral notes and stone fruit come out brightly before fading until only the peat smoke remains with hints of dried fruit. All three spirits showcase their fruity and floral styles alongside notes of peat ash and beach bonfires brought by the Octomore and Port Charlotte components.
Character: Experimental in nature and yet composed, balanced on the palate. The complex individual components of each spirit style come together to contribute to a superb expression of Bruichladdich's distillation, aging and blending potential. The complex cask recipes of each component and the subsequent marriage before bottling contribute to a deeply complex style.
