Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2011
Bere Barley is Britain's oldest cultivated grain and was the grain of choice for Scotland's early distillers for centuries. While the 20th century focused on efficiency and yield, the Bruichladdich Distillery opted for flavor. Since 2006, the Bruichladdich Distillery has been collaborating with the Agronomy Institute of the University of the Highlands and Islands to bring this original barley variety back into single malt whisky distilling.
Bere Barley is a resilient grain adapted to poor soil conditions and short growing seasons with long daylight hours—perfect for Scotland's extreme northern latitudes. Initial trials showed that Bere is a robust barley for milling and mashing. Time and patience were needed to bring out the best in this enigmatic grain.
This single malt presents itself with a rich, buttery texture and a palate full of caramelized peach notes. As the oldest of our Bere bottlings to date, it displays rich notes of ripe melon and pear.
