The Islay home of Johnnie Walker, Caol Ila Distillery is situated on the Sound of Islay and is just a short drive or leisurely stroll from Port Askaig. The distillery offers unrivaled views of the Jura Paps and the distillery will become a tourist center in 2022. As the largest distillery on the island of Islay, the Caol Ila Distillery is capable of producing over 6.5 million liters of whiskey annually, 85% of which is in blends like Johnnie Walker can be used. Caol Ila was built with the purpose of making blends. Since its founding in 1846, the distillery has undergone several renovations to increase production. The Caol Ila 12-year-old was the first Caol Ila single malt released by the Caol Ila Distillery in 2002. Prior to 2002, individual bottlers controlled the single malt market for Caol Ila.
