Pokeno 2021/2025 Manuka Honey Cask
Founded in 2017, this family-run business from the Waikato region, south of Auckland, has since become New Zealand's largest single malt distillery. But what's the secret to their success? While POKENO whiskies are distilled according to traditional Scottish methods, they benefit from a particularly "decelerated" production process: small batches, long fermentation times of over 80 hours, and slow distillation in copper pot stills. In addition, the distillery fully exploits the advantages of the local terroir, for example, through the use of its own yeast strains, special malt varieties, and unique casks made from native Totara wood.
POKENO's true strength, however, lies in its maturation: In New Zealand's warm, subtropical climate, the casks mature significantly faster. The annual angel's share is up to nine percent – a rate that simply makes the ten-year maturation period common in Scotland impossible in New Zealand!
