The Tomatin Distillery is a traditional whisky distillery in the Scottish Highlands, about 25 minutes south of Inverness . It was founded in 1897 by the Tomatin Spey Distillery Company. Although there is evidence of illegal distilling activities at this location as early as the 15th century , legal production only began with this establishment.
In the 1970s , Tomatin was Scotland 's largest malt whisky distillery , with 23 stills and an annual production of up to 12 million liters . After financial difficulties , the distillery was acquired by the Japanese companies Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co. in 1986 , making Tomatin the first Scottish distillery under Japanese ownership .
