Glencadam

In 1891 the distillery was purchased by Gilmour, Thompson & Company Limited who used part of the Glencadam product in their Royal Blend line of blended whiskey. Due to fuel and food rationing, the distillery, like most, had to reduce production during World War II.

History of the distillery

The Glencadam Distillery has a long and fascinating history, dating back to 1825. Located at the foot of the Eastern Highlands in the Scottish town of Brechin, it is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. The distillery takes its name from the neighboring mountain called "The Cat's Back", or "Gleann na Cadhain" in Scottish Gaelic.

The distillery changed hands several times throughout its history and was even shut down at times. However, from 2003 onwards the distillery experienced a renaissance when it was acquired by an independent bottler and operator, Angus Dundee. However, the bottles sold by Glencadam today still bear the crest of the original founder, George Cooper.

Production of the distillery

Production begins with the grinding of barley malt, which is then mixed with hot water in a mash tun to produce a starchy liquid called wort. Yeast is then added and the mixture is fermented to produce alcohol. The resulting liquid is then distilled twice to produce a high-proof alcohol that is aged in wooden barrels.

Glencadam produces a variety of whiskeys including their signature bottling, 10 year old and 15 year old bottlings as well as special bottlings for special occasions. The whiskey is exported worldwide and has a loyal following of whiskey lovers around the world. The Glencadam distillery remains a significant player in the Scottish whiskey market thanks to its high quality whiskeys and long tradition.

Other interesting facts about the distillery

A special feature of the Glencadam distillery is the fact that it is one of the few distilleries that carries out all the steps involved in whiskey production themselves - from malt fermentation to distillation and maturation. This gives the distillery unparalleled control over the quality of the final product, ensuring only the best ingredients and processes are used.

Another notable feature of Glencadam is its unique location in the Scottish Highlands. The distillery is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and is located in close proximity to the River Esk. The water from this river is used as one of the main ingredients in the production of Glencadam Whiskey, giving it its special character and taste.
