Collection: Lagavulin

Lagavulin is a Scottish distillery that produces single malt whiskey. It is located in the village of Lagavulin on the south of the island of Islay, Scotland. Lagavulin Distillery first opened in 1816 when John Johnston and Archibald Campbell Brooks built two distilleries there.
It's unclear which of them - the one that took over the other - became Lagavulin whiskey. However, records indicate that as early as 1742, at least eleven illegal distilleries were burning on the property. After Peter Mackie, the Lagavulin distiller, leased the Laphroaig distillery, various legal disputes ensued with neighboring Laphroaig in the 19th century.

Lagavulin 16 has consistently received exceptionally high marks in international spirits rating competitions. For example, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition awarded the 16-year-old four consecutive double gold medals between 2005 and 2008 and has done so on and off ever since. In 2004, Wine Enthusiast Magazine gave the 16-year-old a score between 90 and 95.
