The production of Jim Beam Bourbon
Every drop of Jim Beam is created through a complex process that requires expertise and patience. And it is precisely this production that defines the whiskey's character.
The selection of raw materials
The recipe for Jim Beam is classic American. You'll need:
- At least 51% corn (this is required by law for bourbon)
- rye
- barley
- Pure, iron-free water from Kentucky
Above all, the high corn content provides the mild sweetness that makes Jim Beam Bourbon so pleasant.
Mashing and fermentation
First, the grains are milled and mixed with water. Boiling creates a sugary mash. Then, yeast and so-called "sour mash" (sour mash from previously fermented batches) are added. This ensures consistent quality and the distinctive character.
The distillation
The fermented mash is distilled in large column stills. The raw spirit still contains very high alcohol levels after this step and must mature before becoming whiskey.
Maturation in charred oak barrels
Now comes one of the most important steps. The freshly distilled whiskey is poured into new, charred American oak barrels. The Jim Beam matures in these barrels for at least four years. The charred barrel walls give the whiskey its golden color, its intense vanilla and caramel notes, and its signature smoothness.
The Jim Beam Distillery's warehouses experience extreme temperature fluctuations throughout the year. This promotes maturation and ensures the unique aroma of Kentucky Bourbon.
Blending and bottling
After maturation, different barrels are blended to ensure the typical Jim Beam flavor always reaches the glass. Before bottling, the whiskey is brought to drinking strength with water.
